On a serious note, it could be your (or someone else's) camera not focusing properly on a set of landing lights.

Biggles,
If your object appeared stationary and very bright in the western sky during the early evening it was probably the planet Venus. Check to see if it is there again after sunset today, cloud permitting. Jupiter is creeping up on it from the east, getting closer and closer every night. There will be a loud bump when they hit eachother (and Jupiter's insurance will have to pay up!). Mars follows them from east to west around midnight.
Update : Venus is very clearly visible in the west at the moment (about 7.20pm). A closer examination reveals that only about half the disc is lit,the right side from our perspective...rather like looking at a half-moon. We only see Venus appear "full" when it is on the opposite side of the sun from where we are.
Cheers,Keith

My UFO described as a BMI Dash should have been in reality a FLYBE DASH. Habu being on the ball pointed it out to me for which I am grateful.
