Just been up to Asda at Runcorn to get some shopping with the wife- there were more people queuing up for petrol than there were customers on the car park. Its crazy- sat in the car and watched a woman go and fill up a green plastic petrol can with petrol then put the petrol in her car, then join the queue and she must have only put about a fiver max in her tank. Is it me or is the country going daft- the petrol tanker drivers only voted on Monday to take industrial action and the Govenment and Mr Cameron lose it completly training up the army to drive petrol tankers and telling everyone to fill up there tanks. Complete madness. Mr Millband is no better either, The owners and ACAS and the unions are going to start talks more than likely on Monday and hopefully resolve the problem. God help us all if they don't. If what I have seen today is anything to go by. Or does the Govenment have another agenda get people to panic buy and get more petrol tax in the coffers. But hey thats Britain isn't it!!!!!! Happy days Bob ;D

A very interesting point, Bob. I trust no goverment any more. They are too corrupt (in many different ways), they care little for the electorate and will do whatever they think is best for themselves. One figure I heard quoted on Sky today was that the government has had a windfall tax boom approaching £12bn as a result of unexpected fuel sales. A coincidence? It's a matter of opinion of course, but I don't believe that coincidences happen very often...

Garstonboy your spot on with your view. This goverment will be found out to be as morally corrupt as the last shower. These people repersent only themselves and not the poor suckers who voted for them. If Belgium can get by without a elected goverment why not give it a try, can't see how we would be worse off.

What the hell happened to good old fashioned common sense ?
If people are stupid enough to sit in long queues or waste even more fuel driving around looking for somewhere to fill up or as I have seen put a top up of less than a fivers worth in a tank. we deserve to be made to run short. If everyone just did what they normally did when filling up we would not be in any mess. Plus until Labour who are funded by unions like Unite who are instigating this via their members are told to behave and act in the best interests of the country and not themselves things aint going to get better. As I understand it they have to issue 7 days clear notification of any potential industrial action ans so far all we have had is hot air from all MP`s.

Don't panic Captain Mainwaring--only problems here are keeping clear of the election garbage and keeping out of the sun. Must be enough to go round or the French would be reacting--like selling more sugar beet fuel to the UK.LOL ps Don't like him personally but well done George Galloway for standing up to the Bloody policies of Blair and his cronies who started more unneccesary wars than Atilla the Hun. Some people still remember the 13 wasted Blair years it seems. In my opinion the whole region is not worth the life of one British soldier.

David , call me Dave, Cameron started the petrol panic to divert attention from the most divisive budget in years: tax relief for the very rich funded by taxes on pensioners followed by tax increases on pasties and hot pies! It is a classic diversionary tactic. We are told that we are "all in this together" but as a pensioner with a disabled wife I don't see any compassion coming from Call me Dave and his fellow Etonian cronies. With the exception of them, we certainly are in in together - and it doesn't take a genius to work out what we are in! For anyone reading this, I am not a socialist or a communist - I am one of your disillusioned Middle Englanders who doesn't know where to put his vote. What a mess. Myadvice to Call me Dave - keep your big mouth shut until there is something positive to say. That way we wouldn't have this rush on petrol. Don't forget there is no strike but talks are imminent.

I was once badly caught out doing "the right thing", and then unexpectedly ended up driving on the autoroute on the fumes that remained in the tank. Since then, at the slightest whiff of trouble, and we have plenty of that in France, I top up. OK I do not queue to put just a few litres in the tank, but my rule is simple:- At the first sign of trouble, check the tank. Half or less, fill it up.

Whats Mr Maude going to say to that woman who was transferring petrol from one can to another for her daughter today in her kichen with the cooker on and got 43% burns- madness- the govenment instead of scare mongering should get all the parties in this dispute around the table and get it sorted. Instead of thinking about the extra revenue they are going to get. Crazy Days Bob

Just been to Asda again with the missus- the queue is now shorter than before- could be that other garages are now charging £1.45 per litre for unleaded. Surprise surprise (Sound just like Cilla) no queues. Happy Days Bob

... and a hastily written cardboard sign from some hassled staff at the entrance to a petrol station not a million miles from here...
"The queue you are sitting in is the Governments fault - NOT OURS" !!

Marvellous how the Government can change the Legal driving hours limit at the drop of a hat , merely to get them off their own hook , not an EC directive , shows they can change the rules if they want to .....let em try some 'deportation' rule changes then

I've been listening to all this waffle about windfall taxes because of a hike in demand. What all these commentators negate to declare is that it will be considerable time before all these panicking drivers fill up again therefore after the feast there will be the famine, very simple economics. I'm not a fan of the government but poor reporting, analysis and conclusions do annoy me just as much as our bumbling leaders.
Personally speaking as an engineer that covers 1500 miles a week on a regular basis, therefore having to fill up regularly, these panicking drivers could make life difficult for me. However if you get on the road with the early brigade there is no sign of panic at any filling stations. Call it my tip of the day if you will......
Regards, Garry

John Mann, Labour MP for Bassetlaw, said Mr Maude should do the "decent thing" and resign, saying of the accident: "This is precisely what the fire brigade warned against and the current panic is a direct result of Francis Maude's rash and foolish reaction to negative press on pasties and number 10 dinners, we are now in a position where a woman's life has been placed in danger. Francis Maude should now be considering the consequences of his actions and do the decent thing and resign."
