Perhaps WMD Blair should have been made to resign for the casualty rate spent supporting regimes that are at best a sick joke. However if he had he would not be earning millons as he does now whilst allegedly avoiding paying much tax. And don't start me off on Cuella de Ville and her property deals that were allegedly honest. That was only panic buying AFTER the press got onto it.

If (and it is still "IF") the tanker drivers do go on strike, will it affect deliveries of aviation fuel to airports? This problem arose during a previous industrial dispute.

Well I topped up today as I haven`t put fuel in for over 3 weeks. I passed four garages in Wallasey and not one of them had a queue or more than about four cars filling up, I ended up at Tesco Bidston very few cars. not a problem. Perhaps us woolie backs are using common sense over here.

I think MAN has a direct pipeline from Stanlow so shouldn't be affected, however LPL has it delivered by tanker so it might. Strange when you can see Stanlow refinery across the river from the airport. By the way isn't Birkenhead known as the "one eyed city"?

It had a few problems of its own recently, when one of the pumping units went u/s and supplies were limited. The tanker drivers (who pump the fuel out of the hydrants) are not involved in the dispute. I've heard Birkenhead described as many things ;D, but never'The One-Eyed City'. Interesting...

Yes correct Birkenhead has always had that nic name. Numerous explanations as to the origin exist here are two from the net and plausible,
WHEN I was an apprentice shipwright, boilermakers who I worked with would always laugh and joke with me, remarking "'Oh, he's not from the One-Eyed City!"
It was not until some time later, on reading an article in the Liverpool Echo, that I discovered that they were referring to Birkenhead.
The article was about a murderer by the name of Kelly who came from the Isle of Man before the first World War. He was supposed by be in 'hiding' in Birkenhead and there were posters bearing his photograph all around the town.
The Home Secretary at the time, commenting at the lack of response from the posters at the time remarked that Birkenhead must be a city of 'one-eyed people'
(The Deacon), Ex-Cammell Laird worker: MY story of how the 'one-eyed city' got its name, was told by my father. The workmen from Cammell Lairds used to go over to Liverpool's St Paul's Eye Hospital for treatment on eye injuries sustained in the shipyard. Colleagues, on seeing the men with a patch over the eye, would comment "I see you have been to the one-eyed city!", referring to Liverpool.

I see the Coalition are at it again. Yesterday Nick Clegg was repeating the David Cameron message that there is no need to panic - thus causing a panic. I note that garages are still not fully stocked even though the initial panic is over. Is this a ploy to keep the motoring public off-balance and smear the union even though conciliatory talks are yet to start? Even the independent garage owners are getting irritated with the government for their interference. Why don't they just leave things alone and let the two parties get on with it?

Must be great living over there watching us lot voting the next shower of parasites in. I'll have to get you a polling booth - no excuses then ;D
You won't have seen it in France but in today's metro there was an article about vanilla pods escalating in price. This too is expected to cause a panic buy. It was accompanied with a cartoon of a man running towards an ice cream stall with a wad of notes in his hand. On the ice cream stand were two notices, the first - 'vanilla shortage, please panic buy!', and second - 'one for the price of two!' ;D

www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m-VgWwfh0c&feature=relatedA Petrol Tanker Fire can and does happen , Professionalism and expert training makes happen a lot less. Tanker Transport Companies just see the Profit margin , and training impingies on that, this is one of the arguments of the Tanker Drivers Unions

Steve-t because I pay my taxes in the UK--yes they have a second bite out of your salary by taxing your pension--I am entitled to vote in UK elections. However postal votes in marginal Labour seats like Morley where loads of---the Educ secretary--has less than a 1000 majority--have a habit of disappearing. Its called disenfranchising and is carried out by political activists in the chain of communication who suspect that statistically ex pats do not sympathise with their cause. Illegal but effective. And despite apologies from the City Hall its too late. BUT I will try again next time --perhaps some Asian gangmaster can collect my postal vote along with his others and deliver them. And this does happen. Sad times And its no better in France--the Swiss on the other hand--no minaretes polluting their skyline.--the benefits of PR true democracy. ps did you know Francois Holland is even shorter than Sarkosy--that's why sizism has not become an election issue in France LOL Elections here are a joke except for the main one.A Mayor get elected/selected and then rules --mad--I just keep out of it. I wonder if I could grow vanilla orchids outside and make a killing.LOL

I remember well, in the days of the prime minister James Callaghan, I took the '172 for a day out in the Isle of White. We wandered into Shanklin and there was a sight to behold. A shop full of sugar. There was a shortage on the "mainland" due to some rumor or other, and panic buying cleared the shelves. We flew back with a cargo of sugar and gained friends for life. How sweet was that?
