The Royal Naval Air Service was established on 1st July 1914. This was combined in 1918 with the Royal Flying Corps and formed the Royal Air force. In 1924 naval flying re-emerged when The Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Air Force was formed and the aircraft remained in RAF ownership and control until May 1939, three months before the outbreak of WW2.
So it looks like the circle has been completed and the Fleet Air Arm is back where it started - part of the Royal Air Force.
With thanks to the Author Rowland White and his book Phoenix Squadron. Rowland is also the author of Vulcan 607 about the Black Buck missions carried out by the Vulcans and Victors of the Royal Air Force in 1982.
Both damn fine books and well worth a read!
