The latest information regarding the new bridge is that the contract to build it is still out to tender. The problems they have found so far is that the initial boreholes which have been drilled have revealed that the Widnes side is solid rock-but as usual the Runcorn side is made mainly of silt. They have considered that the only way to remedy this is to inject tons of concrete into the Runcorn side, but apparently there is no-one in the UK that can do this kind of work. As everyone knows both bridges will be toll bridges- the main thing being- when the roads are finally re-configured ALL traffic will be directed to the new bridge. That is except for the residents of Runcorn/Widnes who will have use the current bridge.- apparently the current road near to homebase will be blocked off and residents will enter the bridge via the oldtown/Greenway Road area- I think it is a case of watch this space on that one. The earliest the work will commence is the end of 2013- but don't hold your breath So the longer it takes to start the more expensive it gets. Happy Days Bob

This will turn in to a huge cash hole as per usual with anything this big. judging by the amount of traffic I see each day on the m53 I think a link from the new knowsley express way going straight a cross the river joining up with the motorway at stanlow / elton area would make more sense to me.

Re: reply #19 I agree it would have seemed logical to connect the Knowsley Expressway to M56 in the Stanlow area - this is fine from an idealistic transport viewpoint. Although I am not certain that analysis of traffic flows would support this route due to amount of traffic that then goes eastbound on the M56 However there are a number of other factors which prevent this: 1. Cost due to length of the road, number of viaducts and bridges. 2. Large bridges need to get required heights over navigable waterways (River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal). Excessive cost due to the low lying land close to the Mersey Estuary. 3. Protection levels afforded to that area of the Estuary - Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Protection Area and RAMSAR site (Highest level of International Designation)
I hope that technical issues can be resolved and the development takes place ASAP in order to give the improved access and reduce the delays experienced by the heavy maintenance required on the current bridge.

The new bridge should be built linking the end of the A5300 to Weston Point. This would keep through traffic away from the towns of Widnes and Runcorn, and also allow for a much-needed spur road to be built to the airport via an upgraded Hale Road, taking airport traffic out of Speke.
