It looks like work has finally started on the new bridge with the "first sod being turned" metaphorically speaking with test bore holes being drilled while the tide was out to-day

About time Brian, i was beginning to think it would never get built. The area needs the new bridge to ease the traffic problems and it should bring more work to the area.

Is this the second lot of test holes they have done now? If it is, does that mean they will be banging on another couple of million to the cost?

We definitely need a new Mersey bridge but not between Widnes and Runcorn. This will only add to the existing congestion. Somewhere around Sankey or even downriver between Halebank and Weston Point would be much better. This is a bad idea!

Yes there was groundhugger. It was situated just to the east of the existing road bridge and the landing stages on either side of the river/canal can still be seen. It closed down in 1961 when they completed the road bridge. Imagine the queues now if the transporter tried to cope with to-days volumes of cars when it could only cope with about a dozen at a time. Regards Beemer.

I have a black & white print somewhere of me as a nipper standing on the old transporter platform. Unfortunately the negative is long since lost...as is the case with all my very old aviation photos, since my dad's curious but unquestioned philosophy was "Once you've got the prints you don't need the negatives any more...throw them away!". And now I could have scanned them!!!

I find prints far easier to get a result from than negatives on a simple scan. True, scans from negatives once cleaned up etc are sharper than an image from a scanned print. I run my prints through Picaso to crop, resize, darken/lighten, sharpen etc., and usually once posted am delighted that the screen picture is better than the original!

Hi folks, These photographs of the old transporter bridge and new road bridge under construction were taken by my wife's father (a very keen amateur photographer) on the 6th June 1960 and may be of interest.... Some great history there - he took loads of photos...thankfully! Cheers, Dave

What fantastic photos of the old transporter and the new bridge being built.
I expect in years to come people will be doing the same with the forthcoming 2nd road bridge looking at images the guys on here will be snapping.
Never knew there was a pedestrian walkway on the railway bridge (lads on bikes) - is that still there today or is it a victim of health and safety?

Hi Maverick, Not sure the situation today (someone will no doubt know the answer), but it used to be a good place for railway photos. This is Royal Scot Class 7P 46128 "The Lovat Scouts" crossing the bridge, same day as the other photos were taken.... Sorry for somewhat hijacking this "new bridge" thread, I'll tell myself off and perhaps move them to a new thread later Cheers, Dave

Yes, the footpath is still there, however it was closed to the public when the new road bridge was opened. It's used by rail maintenance workers.

The footbridge is bricked up on the Runcorn side where the flight of steps use to be for safety reasons as it is constructed of planks of wood in the middle and unsafe. My brother in the early sixties, when we first lived in Runcorn drove his 250cc Velocette over the footbridge because he had missed the last transporter crossing and it would have meant a journey around Warrington. Regards Beemer.

In a similar vein to the pictures submitted by Dave Graham, here's one my father took at about the same time presumably, whilst standing under the old Transporter Bridge on the Widnes side. btw, Dave - great shot of the Manchester Liners vessel in the background in photo 2 - always one of my favourite shipping companies when I was a ship spotter!
