Hi Dave.
Yes, I was thinking that, due to the military flag.
I am thinking could it be Heathrow?

Douglas C-54A PH-TGN was only leased by K.L.M. for a short period February 1953 to January 1954. Previously and subsequently LN-SUM.
A little early for Heathrow. Puts Croydon, Blackbushe or Northolt firmly in the frame, but I'm not familiar with any similar background in the early 50s from other photos.
An interesting one you pose for us, mw5.

A couple of observations: 1) It's not Manchester. 2) It's clearly taxying outside a VIP terminal, although surprisingly there appears to be no reception committee! 3) The use of a DC-4 for a relatively short flight suggests that it might have been carrying the Dutch Royal Family - or perhaps a government delegation? (especially given the short time it was with KLM). I doubt that traffic between the UK and the Netherlands in 1953 would have warranted the use of a DC-4, which suggests that it would be either Blackbushe or Northolt. 4) The flag is that of the former Ministry of Civil Aviation, (not a military one - note that there is no roundel on the flag). The same flag used to fly at the old terminal at Speke when it was operated by the former MCA, which would possibly rule out Northolt and rule in Blackbushe. 5) Weren't the buildings at Croydon always more permanent-looking - ie made from solid materials, rather than the rather temporary-looking buildings in the background?

Looks like Northolt to me, although I can't remember what Blackbushe looked like in that era.

Quick google:
Royal Navy white ensign flag: white background, red cross of St.George, Union Jack in top left segment.
Civil Air Ensign: pale blue background, dark blue cross superimposed on a wider white cross, Union Jack in top left segment.
Royal Air Force Ensign: pale blue background, RAF Roundel on right half, Union Jack top left quarter. No cross of St.George.
To me on the b&w photo the flag appears to have a pale background, rather than white. The white edging to the cross of St.George is hard to be certain of, but I reckon is there = Civil Air Ensign.
To me the low buildings scream Northolt - perhaps the civil section, with B.E.A.s flights pre-Heathrow flew the civil flag to mark it apart from the military station?
Still it remains a cracking b&w photo and a stimulating question!

I doubt that traffic between the UK and the Netherlands in 1953 would have warranted the use of a DC-4, which suggests that it would be either Blackbushe or Northolt. Unfortunately, it was too big for the Royals to use too. Queen Juliana for her visit in 1953 arrived in a DC3. It also landed at an airstrip no-one has mentioned yet - that being Hendon.

Can make polite suggestion re uploads, which is get an account like photobucket and after inserting your picture in that programme you can the upload them in one go which will avoid the effort I went through to view that attachment. Unless that is what you intended.

How did you manage to open them? All I can see is the link, on clicking it I get absolutely nothing.
