I notice that at the top of the index pages that a warning of a pending upgrade of the forum before the end of May. Just how major this upgrade will be is not clear, nor just how much the 'on screen' layout will change.
The owners of Flypast's 'The Aviation Forum' have very recently upgraded their forum, with a drastic change in on-screen look. They have encountered considerable teething problems and resistance to the 'new look'. Not saying that will happen to us, but it is warning. Certainly Proboards have been a far less problematic host than xsorbit were (for those who go that far back on nwan forum).
As I say, unsure what is envisaged by our site hosts or by just how much the site will change visually. It does seem important though that all members know their user name and password. It is quite likely too that the site will be 'down' for a while without warning during the upgrade.

Pro boards actually offered this upgrade to us early as we are considered to be a good customer, with fairly high volume traffic apparently. Although I was busy at the time, I did take a look at what I was expected to do if I upgraded early ....and decided to leave well alone!
I too hope that this upgrade that will now be automatically taking place within the next month will pass without incident and the results turn out to be worth it. I believe that one of the new features incorporates being able to "like" a post ( a la Facebook - wow! ), but I am as much in the dark as most.
I think that uploading photos without such things as Photobucket will also become easier.
Cheers,
Dave

This is all typical of modern life why do things continually have to change. Or could it be that I am getting and I hate to use the word old. Never had this when I was young!!!!! Mind you tv was black and white. Off subject but I was even trying to explain two days ago to my practice manager who Simon and Garfunkel were. At this rate they will replace LPs soon. Bet half the young uns don't even know what an L P is..........

I do not know if this is the same "upgrade" Farnborough proboards had, if so you do get a better icon for new posts at top level BUT lose the detail of when it was posted. I.e. there is something there but you do not know how old it is. There is an annoying ad banner at the bottom that struggles to scroll as you do, I use free proboards app so it may go away if you pay them?
Overall despite some early resistance I got used to it, but worth a look if you want to see what change is coming, or perhaps contact their list owner for feedback straight from horses mouth
Cheers

Looks like I'm ahead of the game for once having fully converted to 8 track cartridges.. Clive's right tho' - change is hard for us 'oldies'. I still get the bus to town and get off at Lewis's. Shop at George Henry Lee and miss C&A, Woolies, Littlewoods, Blacklers, Hobbies and Cooper's. I can still name the England and Liverpool teams circa 1966 but other than Gerrard now - no chance.

Some computer/internet facilities offer the user an option to revert to an older and more familiar presentation of their service. Can we opt for that? I'm off out to see the Dan-Air Ambassador! :-)

Why is that forum users get so worked up about changes to layout during an update?
I regularly visit a number of forum, and am a contributing member of some. They are all different, but still totally functional - I simply adjust to the format and options on the screen.
Apart from a need to adjust to new features, colours and layout, I am puzzled why change, or even threat of change, generates so much angst, resistance and demands that the old format returns - even before it has gone! Yes, there will be a slightly awkward period of getting used to layout and feature changes, but after week or two, I sure everyone will wonder what the initial fuss was about.
True some updates have led to temporary problems regarding loss of data or functions, as is currently being experienced by the Key Publishing/FlyPast 'The Aviation Forum'. I just hope that we do not experience the 'teething problems' problems they are experiencing, and if we do that members will hang-on and patiently work through the issues with the forum administrators and site hosts. The forum I'm quoting purchases in their forum software and is not a Proboards hosted site.
Well, sit back and wait to see what happens. Since it's inception 'nwan forum' has had three host sites (lycos, xsorbit and proboards), each with a different layout, so an update is really just a minor inconvenience. Indeed Proboards have been, in my experience, the best host so far, with few issues arising.

The answer to Viscount's point about objecting to computer service changes/upgrades is that,in my own experience, they are mostly unnecessary and serve only to entertain the designer and confuse the user.

Another forum that I use, National Preservation, has done an upgrade overnight. They use XenForo. I'm about to see if it is of any improvement to the end user.

Problems with log in. Initially refused to remember password/stay logged in.
Layout, whilst in big writing and helpful to those with poor sight, is far too spaced out and likewise, comments/replies are far too spaced out.
Not impressed. In fact not an improvement, but a retrograde move for Nat Pres. However, the Farnborough group referred to above, is a reasonable and acceptable upgrade. However, this too suffers from leaving too much space after comments/replies.
Please do not inflict anything similar to the Nat Pres XenForo upgrade on us!
It is not a pleasant experience and I would disagree with Viscount's comments about "getting used to" new layouts. They can be turn offs.
Habu and Biggles comments are spot on.
I also do not agree with Dave Graham that emulating features from the Book of Face is something to be pleased about. It is anything but!

Am on to it without any real problems. Didn't seem to like Internet Explorer (like many things!) so might go through Chrome or Firefox.
Like everyone else, it'll take a few days to navigate around it but first impressions are that it looks clean and clear.
