I do agree with that AviationCafe about the other shows. Sunderland looked awesome and it was free! The year Southport was held in July was a very good show at Southport. If they held it in July one year, why not every year? Always thought September was a bit late.

I'm not defending Southport's thinking, but it is my understanding that the timing is deliberate to stretch the visitors season, by providing a series of events to swell visitor numbers through September into October, elongating the financial benefits of the summer season. The date for the Air Display does vary within the month due to the need to catch an afternoon low tide. The single time the show has been moved to July was due to clash of the low tide weekend with some other event, cannot recall what. I agree the July weather made the event much more enjoyable - but I also seem to remember that there were such traffic jams on the Saturday that the Sunday show was re-timed to end earlier. The Saturday jams being partly due to a combination of normal Summer Saturday traffic with the air show traffic, swelled massively by the not totally foreseen 'Vulcan' effect.
There can be no doubt that the event attracts great numbers of extra visitors into Southport and extends their summer season. I feel that there would be no doubt that even more would attend in July, but would the parking and roads cope with the extra people and cars?
Any further thoughts?

From memory & speaking to a few of the people involved with the show's over the year's they've also said it's to do with the timings of the tide hence why it changes every year. There's been times when its been close to the start of the month (last year) and times when its been near the end and has had either a day's flying called off due to the weather (Sunday in 2010).. When the show was held in the July in 2011 it definitely made the show more enjoyable & from memory it was there busiest year too iirc. If they did move it to another month (June/July/August) they would have to do more to ease the congestion & traffic jam's getting out of there, as in the present form I don't think the road's would cope at all with it. viscount, What do you think of them trying to pull in larger aircraft of a different variety for the show's, as from a post they had made on facebook asking for what people would like to see, as apart from the Vulcan*, Typhoon, BBMF, Red Arrows, Blades, people mentioned the Red Star Rebels, Catalina, B-17, Canberra etc!

I'd love to see the Airshow in a better month again but the point you raise Viscount and Aviationcafe about the traffic is absolutely true. I tend to wait until all the light aircraft have departed, have tea, then drive home. Even after an hour to 2 after it's finished the traffic on the coast road is horrendous. Sadly although a better month would be good I agree with you that I just don't think that the existing transport links are suitable for it . Shame really! September can be good if the weather is good, I've had many good shows at Southport in the sun, yet I've also gone purple with wind burn and rain as in 2010 but I guess look a Fairford a few years ago. But then again I guess that was warm rain! Unless a viable park and ride scheme or similar was in place a summer show could work but I highly doubt such a scheme would ever be cost effective or taken up by the public. There are many suitable places to park the cars, Beach, is it Victoria park? and there are ample spaces in Kew retail park and the large one by the Station, but i just can't see those retailers be happy or for the logistics to work. I think September shows are here to stay. Any thoughts?

:-SJust found this on the U K Airshow web page Categories: General Date: Sep 11, 2013 Title: IMPORTANT NEWS - Latest news on XH558 Fuel Leak IMPORTANT NEWS - Latest on XH558 Fuel Leak. Issued at 4pm Wednesday 11th September We have now received a report on the state of the leaking No.5 tank from specialists FPT Industries in Portsmouth. Given that more than one leak and other signs of deterioration were found, and that the tank is itself over 30 years old, we have concluded that, if repaired, the tank would remain vulnerable to further leaks. We have therefore decided that repair of the tank would not prove economical and, if reinstalled on the aircraft, could prove to be unreliable. There is no airworthy spare available; we have accordingly commissioned a new tank to be manufactured immediately. With an estimated 16 week lead time for manufacture, we are very sorry to announce that it will not be possible to return the aircraft to flight again in 2013. XH558 has therefore sadly made her last public appearance this year. We now wish to concentrate on ensuring we are able to secure sufficient funding to return XH558 to the air for another two seasons. Please await further news in upcoming official newsletters and VTST Press Releases. Some sad news but with a twist of hope for next year may be ?
