Winter..... likes and Dislikes
likes ----- Nothing
Dislikes-- Everything , Energy Bills , dark ,wet, cold, fog Rain sleet ,snow , Flooding. Christmas carols in shops , traffic queues , people coughing and snotting on public Transport Christmas in general, buying christmas presents , having people wishing me 'happy christmas' or 'new year' and having to say something similar back knowing that nobody means it , people shopping for Christmas as if the shops are closing for a month instead of two days . the Council gritting the roads when its not icy , but fail to turn out when it' s forcast heavy snow , with the resulting chaos. people in pubs coughing and sneezing and basically not giving a toss to infecting anyone near to them. Flu jabs , beer prices going up before Christmas , People who put their outside christmas lights up in October , and leave them up till end of January large inflatable illuminated father christmas's , the people who let fireworks off about 3am new years eve , thats it for now I've gone all dizzy !

My neighbour does not like the UK so bought a house in Spain. He came home (home is figuratively here), put Christmas lights, in November, in his trees front and back and is going back to Spain where they don't celebrate Christmas to the same extent that we do. Is he mad, or is it me? It must be me as I can't see the benefit of manic shopping and increasing the coffers of the retail giants at their behest. Call me a Scrooge if you like, but we seem to have lost our way regarding Christmas. Having said that, I liked the lists of likes and dislikes. Keep them coming.

As an ex pat I like the understated Christmases here.New Year has a greater emphasis and it does seem a great excuse to drag friends in and open a bottle of local bubbly/ .
So here I go with my living in france likes and dislikes.
Dislikes
All the ski adverts. Grey days--yes we do have some. Not being able to get in the garden because its too wet. The leaves clogging up the lawn where I have slaved all year to get looking right despite the French saying I will never get an English lawn.LOL Supporters of Lidl clubs having a freak season or two and finding it hard to get over it.LOL Not to be able to get to see the Reds except by satellite--not as good as driving from Florence to Basle to watch a friendly.
Likes. Sitting by the log fire and feeling smug that my fuel payment will keep it going all Winter. Watching the sun begin to make its rising that bit more to the east every day after Dec 22nd and knowing spring IS on its way. Anticipating a week only of clean pristine snow that will soon evaporate AND knowing that I don't have to go to work or anywhere until its gone. Watching live test matches. Reading amusing comments on the forum. Observing the village unwritten rule that all lights and other decorations are taken down and boxed on Jan 4th.vive la France.
And may I say a Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year to all forumites regardless of colour--blue and red that is.LOL ;D ;D

Likes......mornings just like today's....crisp and cold and wall to wall blue skies....and TRAILS!!!! And phoning yr best mate darn sarf who tells you its 100% cloud cover and cannot see one plane!! :-) It's easy to wrap up warm, scarf hat and gloves, then go for a nice walk.......then a bevvy as a reward......but when it chucks it down too.....that's no fun at all! Xmas evening........doorstep butties, turkey and stuffing in them. Pickled onions and wallies....bit of salad and crisps and dips.......YUM!!!!! Plenty of red wine, maybe some port with the cheese.....why not!!!!!
John :-)

Hey before you berate elderly pensioners who have escaped abroad lets have some figures.
1;paid taxes to our governments for 37 years 243 days.---7 days absent.
2.STILL pay income tax on my pension.
3;Hoping to live long enough to get a bit more back.LOL
4.perhaps readers should find out how many payments go to Pakistan to those who have contributed little or nothing.
Still enjoying the log fire and looking out over the mountains now draped with snow on the peaks.
Still hate snow however distant and postcardy.
Looking forwards to Brendan getting a couple of strikers in his Christmas stocking.LOL
