Sauvigny les Beaune has thousands(literally) of 1/72 aircraft models--some kits others self made. Most are military and wwII but they are a great collection. With the cold war and more modern jets (real not models)its well worth a visit. (no commission paid.LOL)

Ryanairflyer, I am very impressed. Models have never been my thing, well, not inanimate ones anyway, but I am very impressed.

Hi Steve, Yes there are some Viscounts, 1-11 and 707 visible in the backgound. I have some more pics somewhere, but no time to look now as I'm going away soon and have other things to do. Think we got the kits mail order - I'll ask our Phil as I'll be seeing him this week. Steve - do you remember the model shop AJ Gulley in Garston in the 60s? They had all sorts. It was just off St. Mary's Road, in the same side road as the Discount Store and Co-op Funerals (Heald St?). Spent some money there!! Cheers, Dave I remember Gulleys in Garston,I think you could buy records/albums there seem to remember getting some Cream and Led zeppelin albums there,I knew they also sold kits but did not buy any there,Nice memory.

That's right, they did indeed sell records too. The guy there, if my memory serves me, had a beard and smoked a pipe. Cheers, Dave

if memory serves me correct, i think that smiths the bike shop in st marys road, next to joysave ?. the shop you had to walk down a small corridor to gain entry into the shop also sold models and train bits, but i will admit it's nearly 30 years since last lived ( under the bridge ) near window lane alas the estates nearly or completly flattened now.

Brilliant collections must be an age thing with us oldies, I recall hanging my airfix kits from my bedroom ceiling as a youngster, that all stopped after a recent build Lancaster I put airborne must have got shot down on a night raid and nearly knocked me out cold as I slept underneath its route to the ground or my head to be more exact:)

The only one i had fall down was a chinook helicopter due to a massive blade failure to which the fishing wire was holding it up through, unfortunatly there was a fish tank underneath. The fish remained unharmed which is more than can be said for the chinook.

;D Yes definitely an age thing. My collection resembled the Battle of Britain and was set above my head height(5Ft 6in--but above sticky finger height LOL) and thankfully all my family have the same vertically challenged problem----except my younger brother. However as he joined the ATC and that is where the missing models went I will forgive him--just.LOL. Airfix were great model makers and didn't just keep to well known and popular types. As a kid I thoroughly enjoyed their new releases etc that seemed to come out nearly every month-I mean who else made a Wirraway or even knew what one was.LOL My models did not come down due to extra strong fishing line and the knowledge that any forced landings would be scavenged and played to death by siblingitus--those in large families will know this disease well.LOL. I built the 1/144 airliners but they did not hold the same fascination--strange really as my spotting was opposite in interest. I did make the 1/72 DC-3 and Friendship,Bristol Freighter and my favourite the Fairey Rotordyne(another great idea not followed through.) God I have just realised that all this was over 1/2 a century ago--must lie down and take frog pill. Is the Rotordyne still in a museum somewhere-Weston Super mare or somewhere?A photo would be very interesting along with some history for younger members who do not perhaps realise that we used to make some pretty good stuff in the old days.LOL

That was the saddest and most depressing photo I have ever seen. I could weep. Does anyone have a photo of the complete aircraft--standing or flying it really made a statement--the RAF and BEA came very close to buying it and had we had London City it would have been the perfect inter city hopper to our continental cousins in their city centres.--another missed opportunity.

Thank you very much for that--I don't suppose anyone out there has a clip of it flying? This forum is great for all the right reasons--pity the rotordyne wasn't used on the IOM service.LOL Still sad to think a great plane like that came to nothing. Still very very sad about that.

Cheers, Dave Unfortunately not Dave, I used to by most of my models from shops in Aigburth Vale as a youngster. As a teenager I'd pop down to City Models in Elliot Street. I used to have great fun making them and like many hung them from the ceiling. It's strange they've all long since gone but I never recall throwing any away. One of the great things I remember about St Mary's Road is the travel agents shop that had a Cambrian Airways clock hanging outside. Wonder what happened to that? With a bit of luck it may have survived in someones personal or indeed museums collection. Steve
