Attached link confirms the contractor for the extension works has been appointed and that work is due to start next month. Interestingly it mentions that the contract includes an upgrade to baggage handling facilities which would suggest that the proposal to extend the outbound baggage handling area into the ground floor of Hangar 1 is going ahead. www.mclarenconstruction.co.uk/news/If the name seems familiar it is the same contractor who built the hotel and MSCP...

Looks like the contractor may have a little extra time on his hands as work would appear to have already started. Unless, someone else is digging holes.

Could be the site preparation mentioned earlier in the thread? The contractor will be wanting to put up their site boundary fencing and so on before they actually start work on the extension itself.

Thanks for that Andy - your spot on there.
It looks as though the holes were being dug for the fence posts as the fence went up today. As with tradition in the industry, it looks like they will take their Christmas break soon and return in the New Year.

Level 3 is now looking a bit sparce as the food village and cafe ritazza are being cleared. Burger King is staying where it is as it has "state-of-the-art" kitchens which are too costly to move.

During a quick visit this afternoon it was noted that the area to the east of the terminal has now been fenced off and initial ground work has started. Internally, the majority of the area covered by the Aintree Food Village has been surrounded by wooden hoardings, and the seating area by Cafe Ritazza has been cleared and blocked off as well. Back outside, the work on the new car hire facility in the MSCP looks well advanced and can't be too far off completion.

The area formerly occupied by Cafe Ritazza was originally due to have become the Executive Lounge. This has now been relocated as a result of Burger King not moving and the space will now become a Childrens Play Area.
Peel obviously going for the money, Childrens Play Area next to Burger King!

There are some good artists impressions of the new extension in this mornings daily post (and on the next page details of KLMs preferred partner in Liverpools exhibition in the Shanghai expo)

Work has began on the extension. Diggers and a truck mountable (minus the truck) cement mixer are now on site. The aircraft entrance to number one hangar has also been permanently blocked off. Anyone any idea what the last aircraft to use it was?

Level 3 is now like a building site. All shops have closed except Burger King, W H Smith, Wetherspoones and Superdrug as these are staying in the same location. All the car hire people are now in their new offices in the Multi-Storey Car Park and Terravision have moved into a vacant unit next to Ryanair.

Driving past today I noted that the glazing has been removed and plastic sheeting erected at the eastern end of the check-in hall. They have also started to remove sections of the exterior aluminium cladding from the edge of the roof and the escape stairs. I've not been close enough yet to see whether the foundations are complete but I'm presuming they must be for this stage of work to be progressing.

The glass sections which have been removed will be reinstalled in the new extension to save on expense also the marble floor slabs that have to be removed will be reinstated into the new section. This is because the style of floor slab has been discontinued and to restart the production would mean ordering a large quantity, much larger than is required for the extension. This could mean we may see some of the tiles that are on the existing walls being removed and used on the floors of the new extension.
