Yes, likely much the same as when a Hire Car collects a fixed penalty speeding fine from a fixed camera. The Hire Car company will charge a fee, taken from the card number they have on file (£35-50) for passing on your name and address to the speeding fine company, in addition you then having pay the speeding fine/go on a re-education course/receive points - the outcome usually depends on the amount of excess speed.
Likely the same principle with the Bridge Operators, the Hire Company will automatically charge for passing on your information and the Bridge Company will then demand their whack too. So the cost is greater than just the Bridge non-payment fine. One would hope that the Hire Car companies at the Airport will be pointing out the new unexpected 'hazard' when customers collect their vehicles from them.

I would very much doubt that if they can make more money from retrieving fixed penalties. You would have to be pretty stupid to fall foul of it with those signs in place .

Pay on line by midnight tomorrow? What if, like many older people, you are not on line and live in, say, Newcastle and are using the bridge as an A class road to get from A to B? Technology will kick in and you will be fined even though it is no fault of your own. This bridge is Big Brother in steel.

The same applies to anyone in the north of England using the M1, M20 to access Dover via the Dartford Tunnel/Bridge, southern England into South Wales or indeed anyone from the further parts of the UK driving to a Central London Hotel inside the congestion zone. I've never driven through/in these routes - but I am aware of their existence and that there are penalties if I don't pay that far exceed the inconvenience of organising payment.
An ANPR speed camera is 'big brother' watching, not extracting a toll for using a bridge/tunnel/road/congestion zone - the principle of paying a toll for a 'short-cut' route has been around for Centuries (not that it is a welcome thing).

They have set up a call centre, you can also pay by phone assuming you have a mobile.

Agree with Maverick. Why do we have to have a toll in the first place ?? Do what they did in Scotland, abolish all bridge charges........... It seems to have been made unnecessarily complicated, perhaps on purpose so lots of penalties can be issued...

Personally I hate the idea of tolls but I also think that the number of people it will effect using the airport will be a very small percentage of the total traffic using the bridge. I you are like me when I(mainly as a family)use the airport we use a taxi to get there, so that cost will be carried by the taxi. Even if you are being dropped of by a friend or a family member they will have to pay the toll. The only people it will really effect are those using the airport or private parking areas and again how many will and do actually use the bridge is unknown. There is away round this, if you are of the opinion that vehicle tax should pay for all roads, then switch to a zero emissions vehicle or a vehicle made before January 1st 1977 and you won't have to pay any tax. I am seriously considering the first option for my next car.
A question that I have just thought of is this. What happens to the money recovered from the penalties does this come off the cost of building the bridge?

I pay £20 a year car tax and the majority of cars these days are low tax. I would rather pay that extra bit more than have to worry about a toll.

Just reading this thread has been interesting.
Some points I would make. 1) At this current time NON of the new roads and bridge are not on Sat Nav - may be different when it finally opens sometime next month. 2) For those you are not aware, the (old) Runcorn / Widnes "Jubilee" bridge will close on the same day as the new Gateway bridge is opened and will remain close for approx 12 months to catch up on maintenance along with realigning / altering the existing roads leading to the "Jubilee" bridge. 3) We are the only area were we have got to pay over EVERY crossing over/under the river (four in total) unless you drive to Warrrington. Where else in the UK that happens? Yes you have Dartford Tunnel as an example but that is just one crossing the River Thames, the others are free! From next year the Severn Road Bridge becomes free! "Our" area as a whole is being penalised by central government.
And now a question - those members who have already have registered and got a screen sticker, could you please advise where you advise to locate it on your windscreen? I am just curious.

8Arail the sticker comes with detailed instructions on where to stick it on your windscreen. Yes but that is not the answer to my question - I was asking where you put it just out of curiosity. Is it a secret or something? Sorry.
