Kev,
I think they are aiming for locals to use the facility and not have to travel to the south coast ports to start and finish but you never know.

You are right Ghostrider, It is aimed at us locals first, we need to make sure the cruises currently booked are full to entice the larger companies, and show there is demand. From what I gather cruise lines plan about 3 years in advance so any major operators (other than Ocean Countess and Fred Olsen) won't appear until 2014 onwards, although Fred Olsen is booked for next year.. In addition I also beleive that the first cruise from Liverpool isn't full yet (probably a good thing though, iron out any potential teething problems).

I am enthusiastic about this venture. Its puts Liverpool back to where it was 40 or even 50 years ago. I just don't like the word "temporary". Big money cruise passengers expect the best... anything less will not be acceptable and will cause people to go elsewhere next time. Regional loyalty has its limits. The Liverpool waterfront coupled with a FIRST CLASS facility will be a winner. Hopefully the terminal operators are planning right now to have improved rail connections to Liverpool, and express luxury transfer from the airport. (Just go to Miami and see how they do it there.) Good luck and bon voyage.

Ronturner is correct. The facility needs integrated transport as part of the holiday package. Let's hope that 'brains' are concentrating on this important aspect of the operation.

The site is on the old Riverside station, maybe they could reinstate this route to the terminal but the new bridge, over the Pier Head canal link, is probably not strong enough. What's going to happen to the existing terminal at Hornby Dock? It will more than likely be demolished.

Dont forget there will be another cruise liner terminal that is planned to be built just north of the one we have now which is part of the Liverpool Waters scheme.

If I take you back to 1970, I used to work at Plessey Edge lane, and after work each evening I would drive down to the Pier Head to wait for my beloved to exit from the Liver Building. She worked for Union Castle Line. (Kayzer Irvine.) In those days you could park up at the Pier Head quite easily. There was just time to buy the Echo to read which of the docks were working or on strike today. There was nearly always a ship to see. Here is the Empress of England 1970:- and the Empress of Canada 1971
