Presumably Peel will now look to start work on this scheme fairly soon with a view to its completion leading to Cat 3 approval before next winter.

Couple of photos I came across while looking for something. Two photos of the mound that was. Wouldn't it be great if it could return to as it was instead of the litter infested, 4 x 4 test track that it has become and a change of plan to keep it as was. I recognise John and Phil on there but who is "Hungry Horace" on the left?

I believe, but don't quote me, but the spotting "facility" lovingly known as the mound is to be returned to as it was in my first photo. The haven for 4 x 4 's is to be flattened again so they will have to go some where else for their kicks. I hope they install cctv cameras to keep their eyes on the rubbish dumpers but that may be a bit too much to ask. The only downside is without the humps us photographers will have trouble snapping aircraft lining up for 27 so sets of steps will have to be order of the day. Regards Beemer.

Work is to commence soon on improving "The Oglet", this is the area past the mound that has the paths through it that lead to the Lighthouse. Work includes, improving paths, adding new steps seating and obstacles to try and stop 4x4's. This work is possible due to a grant application of 50 grand from the Lottery to HBC/Friends of Oglet...
I am not very good with technical matters - so here is what happened last night at a Hale parish council meeting... Residents of Baileys attended and aired their views. At the Hale Parish Council Meeting of Monday 20th October, a presentation was given by two guys from Peel/LJLA, on the blocking off of Dungeon Lane for the new Run off at the end of 2'7. HBC will issue a section 106 for the stopping off - closing of Dungeon in the next month or so. A new Bridal path will be made from Hale Road to Baileys Lane - while Bailyes Lane will be re-opened and the safety gates removed - that where added some years ago to prevent fly tipping and 4x4's etc. At some point -due to objections, there may be a Public enquirey of some sort. A new fence will be added to to complete the run-off area. The farm land for the run-off is now Peels land. Peel now re-own the airport. The deadline is Jan 2015 for work to commence (I think)....

We have known for some few years now that the days of 'our' spotter's car park "The 27 Mound" are limited.
It would appear that the timetable for removal of the area in conjunction with Cat.III installations has again been set.
This has been abstracted from the minutes of the Liverpool John Lennon Airport Flight Safety Committee Meeting No.3 of 2015.
The comments regarding issues of land ownership and road closure public enquiry don't seem to have move forward much in the past two/three years. Does anyone know if there is a date yet for the Public Enquiry? From the vagueness of comment, I'd be surprised if the road closure actually occurs in December .... but it is clear that the writing is clearly on the wall regarding the current spotter's location.

The Airport has asked us to communicate, as a courtesy to the many aircraft enthusiasts who frequent Dungeon Lane and 'The Mound', that they will be closing the 'spotters mound' for good from Monday 14th December 2015 onwards. Levelling Ground works will subsequently take place with this area permanently being closed and fenced off. Whilst this is their land and in theory no one should be using this area, as a courtesy they thought they would communicate this to promote on-going good relations with the spotter community. As we already know - this work is required by the Civil Aviation Authority in order to comply with regulated issues relating to aviation safety and security including an extended minimum Runway End Safety Area and is necessary in gaining full CAT III ILS.

Thanks for that Mr Fola. An end of an era. Here's hoping there will still be access to the lay-by on the back road as an alternative viewing / photography position for the NWAN members and enthusiasts in general.Regards Beemer (Administrator).

Everyone will have to do what I did, buy a house in Hale. Ok everyone thinks I am mad but then non plane spotters.... Well they are the crazy people. That's why we are all so calm and chilled, because we understand what is important in life. Aeroplanes!

I was in Dungeon Lane today and can confirm that the "mound" (site of the old cottages) was being levelled.

I don't understand why the mound has been flattened so soon. All it will do is push the casual observers towards the crash gate. I know the area as a whole will be closed off eventually, but why was the mound interfering when it isn't directly in line with the runway. Is it more for security reasons rather than to achieve cat iii
