One comment heard on the first flight on Monday by two businessmen who were wondering what all the fuss was about. They were completely unaware it was the official launch and had just booked a flight from LPL to AMS. I hope this is because their booking agents are on the ball!

So with the flight running for 10-11 days now, here are some general observations of trends for bookings. Firstly, some of the initial loads were quite poor, but I am pleased to see that the loads are picking up quite well. Indeed, there are some very good forward bookings on certain flights during the next couple of weeks. northbynorthwest, you say that you can see the future booking numbers but can you see what they have been? On 2nd April, KL1041 was a Fokker 100, did this aircraft substitute for the Fokker 70 because of the load?

It looks like KLM are also expanding in Canada. I have just booked a June flight with KLM round trip, YYZ-LPL via AMS.

For those of us who don't carry airport codes in our heads, could users translate destination codes within the text please? Admittedly we do know the more common codes - LHR, AMS etc, but YYZ is an example of destination that needs an explanation. Clarity please.

Flew out on the evening flight on Wednesday (8th). About 50 or so on board, plus one revenue passenger in business. Not bad for a Wednesday before Easter. Returned on Friday (10th) on the last flight. My guess is there were about 70 on the flight, plus one in business. An excellent load so soon into a new flight. A couple of observations, which I will also make in the appropriate quarters. The queue for security (which I know has been done to death in the past - and rightly so), was way past Burger King. The whole thing is a mess, and many of the pax don't seem to help because they act as though it's their first experience. There was only one other flight departing at the same time. Perhaps the only way to get Peel to wake up on this one is for the retailers to complain that the time spent queueing is stopping people from spending money. The second concerns the Halewood Lounge, which seems to be used as some sort of staff meeting room. Also, it was staffed by an Eastern European. Now, I don't want to get all political over this, but with unemployment as high as it is on Merseyside, is there no-one from the local area who could be doing this job? A tip for the spotters - you may (or may not) know that all the Fokker-operated flights go from the main ramp parking area next to Pier C. This means that you are bussed out to the aircraft and therefore get a free apron tour thrown in on the KLM flights!

Sorry, LPL, I don't have that information - I can only see the actual numbers of passengers booked, not their itineries - but that would be interesting.

Garstonboy, did you get any sense of what percentage of passengers were business travellers? That is what is going to make or break this route. As an aside, your postings about your travels are wonderful.

Even though it was Good Friday, it looked to me as though many of them were business travellers, judging by the laptop bags, and the usual business paraphernalia. I agree that the business/transfer market will make or break this route. I was very pleased to see so many pax on the route so early in its' life. Long may it continue!

I'm not sure how the business man will like the 1 day return fares on KLM. My missus is a regular traveller between the North West and AMS and her company are being very careful on price with business class off the menu for short european flights. She is going next week and a day return in economy LPL-AMS-LPL is £342. Granted her last trip from MAN came up as over£400 but her boss wouldn't have it and they went from LPL for £100. I suspect you'll see her on the EZY 7001 Monday morning!
I guess any introductory priced flights have gone and if prices remain high for economy then they may struggle on the point to point market against easyJet

Fair comment louie, but I don't think that KLM is that interested in the point-to-point traffic. Emirates is more expensive than KLM (generally speaking) on the MAN-Dubai route. They're not that interested in the point-to point either. They want to carry people on to the Far East and Australasia - at least that's what a mate of mine who works for EK tells me! The killer on the LPL-AMS is the 'Saturday night rule', which KLM uses to the full, and thus if you're travelling on a weekday you are hit for the max. I think there's room for both operators on the route - broadly speaking they're offering a different product. Time will tell...

The first flight in this morning from AMS, KL1037, showing just 7 seats in KLM Select and 6 in KLM Economy left available.
Using the airlines website the KLM Fokker 70 seating layout is 50 seats in KLM Select and 30 seats in KLM Economy giving this flight a 84% LF.

Saturday night rule?? 4 of us are off to Amsterdam with KLM this Tuesday returning on Friday for £77 rtn each inc tax. Re the cheaper promotional fares and the Saturday night rule. This is taken for the KLM website 'The minimum stay is 2 days or there should be a Saturday/Sunday night included in the stay'.
