Due to an eruption of a volcano in Iceland all UK airports have flights suspended to at least 6pm tonight due to the volcanic ash in the atmosphere. With the Volcanic ash still at upper levels.I dont think this would pose much of a threat to say a Flybe dash8 flying between LPL and the IOM today, for example.I accept there have been a number of incidents involving Volcanic ash and other volcanic debris ,in the atmosphere.I personally think this blanket decision has been taken too early, but having said that the authorities are in a no win situation, and have probably taken the easy way out and closed British airspace,I havent heard anyone say,"they will know more when the dust settles" yet LOL,I am flying out of LHR myself on sunday so I hope its all resloved by then but who knows.Just my opinion by the way.

The latest in lunch time tv news is that the 6pm deadline may be optomisitc and the grounding coud last a l ot longer. The grounding has now spread to some European and Scandanavian countries. May be just the traffic using the programmes but I can not access Virtuel Radar or Flight Radar 24 right now ? Lastly how this will resolve now the ban is in place will be interesting time wise as the volcano is still sending out ash and until it stops ?

If all airports are closed and UK airpspace is also closed except for emergency flights, how come I saw a light aircraft crossing Wallasey whilst I was visiting Lidle this afternoon time about 4pm today, and also getting home my airband pIcked up c/s G-UV CALLING ON 119.85 about 6ish.?

Hi Biggles I thought I heard on radio4 news that the ash layer was higher up in the atmosphere, at around 11,000 ft, so wouldn't affect light aircraft at lower levels.
I may be corrected on that one though

I agree, but the news is telling everyone that the airpspace is closed to all traffic with the exception of emergency flights, I presumed that meant ALL non emergency traffic, perhaps an ATC forum member can enlighten us lesser mortals. Quiet isn`t it ?

I believe it is just Class A and B airspace that is closed, ie airways and certain other areas. Arguments are going on on PPRUNE about whether or not NATS can actually "close" airspace. Closure has to be imposed by the UK Govt and presumably this is what has happened, with responsibility for enforcement being delegated to NATS. Outside the prohibited airspace, GA pilots can fly as they please, although they will still need a zone crossing or entry clearance from, in our local case, Lpool ATC. Lpool Zone is Class D. If ash does start falling to lower levels or even the ground, it will be foolish to fly any sort of aeroplane through it. Won't do your car much good either!

Parked up in Northwich at about 1700 and I saw 3 microlights heading north, and a couple of light A/C as well. Thought my laptop/SBS had failed this morning when I came downstairs to a blank screen. However it had picked up a couple of interesting strays during the night/early morning: Finnish A330 , Russian IL96 and IL62. Every ash cloud has a silver lining.

I put the scanner on yesterday evening after work and it was like the airband equivalent of "28 days later" - spookily silent. I think in 2 hours or so I heard about 4 brief conversations, twice someone talking to EGGP tower but couldn't quite make out the conversation (sounded quite distorted), and a couple of bursts for Barton..
