Just checked on the Intercontinental DC-8 and it appears he clipped another DC-8's tail whilst on take-off from Stansted back in September 1982, it came to Manchester straight after this and was here for a while I think

Excellent stuff Ian. I remember nearly all, apart from the Intercontinental. Now I need to dig some of mine out, Interflug Tu134, LOT Il-18 and NASA 747 with Discovery on it's back, all happy memories. Can't believe that we all now excited about the 787 when we had all the beauties at MAN.

Got to agree with that last line from Stu.
"Can't believe that we all now excited about the 787 when we had all the beauties at MAN"
I think the word then was variety rather than the quantity of movements we get now from RyanEasyBE etc.
Didn't that DC 8 damage its flaps on take off from Stansted, when it hit the opposite end approach lights? Or was that another incident i am thinking of.

Hello Ian I was at the Brickworks for the NASA 747/Shuttle flypast. The date i have in my records shows 07-06-83. NASA '747 N905NA plus Shuttle 'Enterprise' (Maybe this should have been given the reg NCC-1701 !!). The '376' on the nose of the '747 was a Paris Air Show number. Cheers Shaun

Shaun I can confirm that date, I was on top of the Multistory carpark www.airport-data.com/photographers/Chris+Hall:2873/Manchester-Airport-EGCC:12854:1.htmlThe flyby was enroute from Le Bourget to Keflavik, runway 04 (now 05) was in use but the 747 came down 22 (now 23) ATC asked for a second flyby but due to fuel restrictions this was declined and also the reason it used the 22 approach. Think that should be 06 now 05 and 24 now 23 Brian.....

Wow these were the days when I used to catch the 500 bus from Stretford Arndale to MAN, not something I would let my 10 yo do nowadays!
I remember the CP & Wardair DC10's and occasional 747's, a USAF C5 Galaxy did a touch/go one Saturday morning that caught us all out as we were sat in the café area downstairs. Upstairs on the piers of A/B/C when fully open were really good, they soon closed though and we were restricted to the glasshouse. Guppy, RSAF Herc's, lots of great great aircraft in those days, DC8'S/707'S/Tristars/DC10'S, lots of noise and smoke, not the same anymore.

Hi Flew out from Manchester in early April 1981, during a baggage handlers strike on a CP Air DC8-63 for Toronto. Seem to remember the flight was full of grandparents visiting their kids and grandchildren. I flew onto Detroit with Republic on a DC9-15 The crew were very generous with the drinks, all from bottles. After two passes they told everyone to help themselves from the bar at the rear. The captain even gave us a tour around the CN Tower. Flew back 3 weeks later on a CP Air B747-100 or 200. (Have still got one log book somewhere in the house and if I find it I will update the post.

Some great shots here which bring back so many good memories. Shaun, Thats a corker and no mistake. A significant photo of aviation/space history. If there was an nwan hall of fame, that frame would be in there i think.

I wont argue as it was over 30 years ago, I just remember the big grey girl appearing from behind Pier 1 and filling our view, we were downstairs in the café and legged it upstairs to the top of the Car Pk, she was long gone by the time we got up there!

Going back even further, during the late '50's we rode our bikes from Stretford to 'Ringway Airport' . Couldn't afford a camera then so no photo's! Remember BOAC DC7C, BEA DC3's, Sabena DC6, Dan Air Bristol Freighter, Sabena Convair Metropolitan, Flying Tigers Connie doing a run and break into the circuit. A Dragon Rapide doing pleasure flights from right next to the fence 15/- ! Don't think there were any jets then but remember the first Caravelle flights over our house. Probably lots more but hard to remember. We didn't bother with regs then, just loved the aeroplanes.
